The 2023 Awards Show was held on Thursday, May 4, at the 40 Watt in downtown Athens.

The Awards Show included featured performances by Caroline Herring, last year’s winner Elijah Johnston, and the five finalists for the Vic Chesnutt Songwriter of the Year!

Caroline Herring


Elijah Johnston

2022 winner, Elijah Johnston, performed his winning song, Molly Haskell, as well as new music as part of his 2023 appearance.

Caroline Herring is an American folk singer, songwriter, and musician. She won Best New Artist at the Austin Music Awards in 2002, and has been making music ever since. Caroline has appeared on All Things Considered Weekend and A Prairie Home Companion, and has played many festivals nationally and internationally, including Newport Folk Festival, Austin City Limits Music Festival and Merlefest. Caroline has lived in Atlanta for 20 years and is a regular at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur. She is best known for her historical story songs and has recorded eight albums. Caroline will participate in the Black Legacy Project in Atlanta in April, and was recently asked by WABE in Atlanta to write and record a song for season four of the Buried Truths podcast. As a graduate student in Southern Studies at the University of Mississippi, Caroline co-founded Thacker Mountain Radio, a live-audience radio show. It continues today as a weekly broadcast on both Mississippi and Alabama Public Radio.
